A lot of us dream about fame and fortune through modeling, but there are companies
out there that have a different dream: separating you from your money. How
do people get ripped off?
The con artists cash in on the dreams of glamour held by so many people. They make promises of jobs with top modeling agencies, even with MTV, to hook their prey. Those promises never come true.
In some instances, less-than-legit "talent agencies" have managed to directly connect themselves to highly regarded, well established agencies to suck in marks with money in their pockets. Read more about last year's debacle for the Wilhelmina Models. That incident effectively shut down Trans Continental Talent, which billed itself as the largest Internet talent agency.
While there are certainly reputable agencies out there, you need to ask some questions to see if you're dealing with one. Otherwise, your picture-perfect dream may turn out to be just another negative financial experience.
For example, simply ask the agency where most of their income comes from. In other words, do they make more money from placing people in jobs, or from selling training services and photo portfolios?
Here's a good example of a con. Do you have a beautiful baby you think should be in the spotlight? Great! But don't believe the "scout" if he or she tells you you should pay them for professional photography. Legitimate agents ask for basic snapshots that you already have in your scrapbook.
A reputable modeling agency will also give you some names of successful clients. Ask for those references.
Before you do anything with a so-called talent agency, read this publication from the Federal Trade Commission. It gives specific advice on how to spot a potential scam.
And finally, if your first interview with an agent or scout sounds more like
a sales pitch for their services, then the promises of fame are probably fraud.
Exit the runway… fast.
